He and his family emigrated to Corvallis, Oregon after the Vietnam War as refugees. At the age of 27, he was diagnosed with Leukemia and is now a cancer survivor. Dr. Pham and his family have been fortunate to live the American dream. He strives to give back and help others. That is why he decided to become a pediatric dentist. After completing his residency at Oregon Health & Science University and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital he created Hi5 Dental Dentistry for Kids. Dr. Pham’s goal is to provide access to dental care in a positive environment. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Pham provides charity dental care for children that have complex medical conditions from all around Oregon. Dr. Pham’s personal and professional experiences have given him the ability to work well with others and will help guide him in making important evidence-based policies for Oregon. Dr. Pham and his family have been fortunate to experience the American Dream. That is why he continues to give back to his community. He has donated countless hours providing free dental care to children and adults here in Oregon. He has also traveled to orphanages in Romania to do the same. Giving back doesn’t just involve dentistry. Dr. Pham is a cancer survivor and he continues to work with the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute to be an advocate for patients and help with fund raising efforts. Dr. Pham has traveled to Vietnam to help provide free prosthetic hands to land mine victims. It is a privilege to be able to help others. When Dr. Pham isn’t volunteering his time treating patients pro bono. However, many Oregonians do not have access to medical and/or dental care. As a cancer survivor Dr. Pham has experienced first-hand how broken our medical system actually is in Oregon. At the age of 27, immediately before starting his dental residency, he was diagnosed with leukemia. He could not afford the $15,000 monthly copay for the cancer treatment. He spent months essentially wasting away and waiting to die, until he finally received the financial assistance he needed to get the treatment necessary for his survival. As an Oregonian who is living with a pre-existing condition. Dr. Pham knows how important it is to fight to help keep the Affordable Care Act in place. And to ensure that no one can ever be discriminated against for having a pre-existing condition like Dr. Pham. This is especially important for our pediatric patients who are born with medical conditions or develop them early on in life. As a clinician Dr. Pham has worked hard to take care of his pediatric patients. His 15 years of experience in healthcare has given him an in depth knowledge and understanding of how the Healthcare system works. He has also earned the respect of his fellow colleagues at all of the different Hospital Systems in Oregon. We need to invest more funds into schools and in educating our children in order to give them the tools necessary for leading successful lives. Such investment could be in the form of preschools, higher education or vocational programs. I am certain that I am where I am today because of the excellent education I received through the public school system in Oregon. Both small and large businesses in our community should work together with our local government to create more jobs that provide living wages with medical and dental coverage. Having access to better paying jobs will allow Oregonians to save for the future. One example of how our local government can help better our communities is the state retirement program called Oregon Saves. His family immigrated to the United States after the Vietnam War as refugees. The hardships of living below the federal poverty level and learning a new language and culture was very difficult at first for his family. Overcoming these obstacles has given him a unique perspective and insight into how legislators can help improve policies to increase diversity, equity and inclusion. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused financial hardships and housing instability for many families. We need to have a strategic plan in place to help those who are impacted by the pandemic economically and emotionally. My experience as a business owner, health care provider, humanitarian, Pediatric Dentistry Chairman at Randall Children’s Hospital, and member of the Governor’s Children Cabinet, Oregon Board of Dentistry, and Charitable Foundation Board provide me with a unique perspective and experience to design and execute such a plan. But, my story dates back to 1980 when I came to the U.S. with my family as a one-year-old refugee from Vietnam. My parents, pregnant with me, escaped on a boat into the open ocean, not knowing if they were going to survive the journey. While at sea the boat was robbed by pirates on several different occasions. Eventually we were rescued by a commercial vessel and taken to a refugee camp in Malaysia, where I was born in the modest grass hut pictured here. My family was determined to get to the United States, and we were eventually sponsored by a church and immigrated to Corvallis, Oregon. We didn’t have much growing up so I focused on studying hard in school, and made my way through Oregon State University, and was then accepted into Dental School at Oregon Health & Science University before completing my specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry at OHSU and Doernbecher in 2009. I got diagnosed with Leukemia in 2007 right before I was about to start my residency at OHSU & Doernbecher. This experience furthered my passion for health system reforms, as I struggled to pay medical bills and survive. My life experience has helped shape me as a person and a healthcare provider. In 2010 I started Hi 5 Dental Dentistry for Kids, to provide care for the underserved children of Washington County. Since then, I have expanded the practice and now serve children from all around the state. America has been great to my family, and I love this country and the opportunities available through hard work.
